Dr. Yeongchi Wu tasked us to design a non-electric vacuum pump that could be used in the production of trans-tibial prosthetics for low income countries.
Using pre-existing and inexpensive materials, we reversed the air flow of a common bicycle pump to suck air in rather than push air out. A bicycle supplied the power via a flywheel that turned a series of cranks actuating the pump to suck air from a supplied surge tank that hooked into Dr. Wu's prosthetic-making device.
